Ecological Retaining Walls and Slopes
Geogrids are commonly utilized to provide reinforcement to retaining walls and slopes in land filling works. This retainingsystem consists of high tensile strength elements, in this case geogrid layers, extending from the slope face into the soil, to resist the horizontal pressure created by the backfill soil, being restrained through the frictional stresses and the interlock system between the geogrid layers and the backfill soil.
The wall facing is built as wrap-around lifts with the geogrid layers, which allows vegetation to grow and cover it in order to achieve a very attractive ecological environment.
For this application, uniaxially oriented geogrids are most commonly utilized, because tensile strength is required in one direction of the geogrid plane only. The type of geogrid to be selected will depend on the tensile strength required, as well as the interaction performance between the geogrid and the soil. Spacing between geogrid layers, as well as their lengths are to be calculated on the retaining wall design.
Omali S.A. can provide design services for this type of geosynthetically reinforced soil retaining walls and slopes systems. We also have the capability to direct and execute these types of projects whenever this is required by our clients.
